Helen Jacobi: first priority is to be with the people of St Matthew's.

The new vicar of the central Auckland parish of St Matthew-in-the-City is the Rev Dr Helen Jacobi.

The appointment was announced at services this morning. Helen Jacobi says her first priority is to be with the people of the parish when she takes up the role in May.

“I am very much looking forward to joining the parish of St Matthew’s in its ministry in the city of Auckland. The parish has a long history of being a spiritual presence in the heart of the city and I am excited to see what the next phase of its history will bring.”

Helen Jacobi was Dean of the Waiapu Cathedral in Napier from 2004-13. She is currently priest-in-charge of tt Heliers/Glendowie, Auckland.

She has also served parishes in Wellington and Ottawa, Canada.

Helen Jacobi has a Bachelor of Arts (Auckland), Diploma in Social Work (Victoria), Bachelor of Divinity (London), Doctor of Ministry in Preaching (Chicago), and Certificates in Congregational Development and Consulting (New York).

Last year she spent three months at Virginia Theological Seminary, US, as a scholar in residence.

St Matthew’s has been seeking a new vicar since the resignation of the Rev Glynn Cardy last October.

I agree totally with Gail Young, you Rev Helen are charged before God to teach the truth of His word & that means not redefining what the Bible clearly sates is sin. It is unloving to those who so desperately need to hear the truth & it is even more unloving to those who struggle with same sex attraction & yet abstain because of their trust in Christ & His word.

We feel that your comments from the pulpit of St Matthews were particularly untimely and made even worse by your having them broadcast over the t.v. We feel that your comments were absolutely mischieveous, given that you know very well that this extremely serious matter which has every possibility of splitting the church in half is going to be voiced at tomorrows Gen. Synod. People are entitled to a more scripturally correct sermon and not be led astray. Matt 18:6 Can you please tell me where and when any Anglican Church in this province has in fact prohibited any person with same gender sexual orientations from partaking in the Eucharist? It is also accepted that these people may even be ordained provided they are chaste in terms of Canon Title D 1.10.4 Whether you like it or not the church is locked into the doctrine of the 1857 Constitution and if you do not like that we suggest that you meditate on the words of Bishop Selwyn's address to the 1859 Synod. If you do not have that please contact us and we can provide you with it. In the meantime we will remain orthodox anglicans.
