Two Wellington churches have attracted unusual graffiti but church officials say they are more concerned about the mystery tagger's state of mind than the vandalism.

Yesterday afternoon someone wrote a tirade in red marker pen from head height to the floor on the foyer wall of St Peter's Anglican Church in Willis St, crying out against unnamed "attackers".

The note, signed "BR", says its author was raped and abused, and calls on God to punish those responsible. More worryingly, the author says, "I wish I was dead after what yous did to me."

The vicar of St Peter's, Godfrey Nicholson, said it appeared to be the work of someone "who has at some time been greatly disturbed ... we would like to know who this poor person is, but we can only speculate as to what is behind it".

The Dean of the cathedral, Frank Nelson, said a member of the public had interrupted a woman tagging a bench outside the cathedral.

The woman fled, but left graffiti similar to that at St Peter's.
