Over 300 former pupils and supporters of St Mary’s Diocesan School in Stratford have gathered from all over the world to celebrate the school centenary.

Three days of celebration this weekend began with a service in the chapel.

Archbishop Philip Richardson said St Mary’s was “a little school with a huge heart and a strong sense of family.

“The current principal, Fiona Green, has lifted the school to a whole new level,” Archbishop Philip added. “Last year’s academic results were outstanding.”

The centenary cake was cut jointly by the oldest serving staff member and the youngest student.

In the beginning St Mary’s had only two teachers – Miss Marchant (also (the principal), and Miss Shepherd – 2 boarders, 10 day girls and 10 day boys.

The roll climbed steadily and in 1917 the board bought the current site of 11.5 acres and arranged for new buildings.

The building named after Miss Marchant originally provided accommodation, but is now used for teaching.

The current chapel was built in 1956.

The principal at that time, Miss Roberton, enlisted staff, students and others to dig the foundations, make bricks and fundraise.
