IDC gives Confirmation a boost

A new resource for Confirmation is launched at the InterDiocesan Conference in Fiji.

A new resource for Confirmation has been launched at the InterDiocesan Conference in Nadi (Fiji) to raise the profile of the rite and to promote adult education in the church.

The resource has been prepared by the Tikanga Pakeha Ministry Council and reveals that between 1985 and 2006 Confirmation numbers dropped by about 90% across the province.

The resource is the work of Rev Brian Dawson and Rev Kirsten Dawson and has two parts. The first examines the history and understanding of Confirmation; the second looks at Confirmation preparation.

Launching the resource, Mr Dawson noted that unlike other Anglican provinces the New Zealand church culture lacks emphasis on adult education.

“My hope, as we launch this resource, is that it can draw our attention to the broader issue of the church’s need for continuing adult Christian education.” he told the conference.

At the close, Archbishop David Moxon thanked Mr Dawson for the resource, and affirmed that Confirmation is a sacramental action that strengthens what is received in baptism to enable the mission of the church.
