General Synod Te Hīnota Whānui 2026 delegates who were in a boating accident in Tonga last week have returned safely home to Aotearoa.

“We’re extremely proud of our people and Tongan crew members who helped with the rescue." said Archbishop Justin Duckworth.

"Despite everything, we heard stories of people looking out for one another, working together, and finding the strength to make it through safely.” 

“No one was left behind.”

As the boat sank further, delegates were in the water, with some making their way towards a second vessel carrying fellow Anglican delegates. An Anglican EMT aboard the second boat worked alongside its skipper to assist those in the water and call for a rescue vessel.

Both rescue vessels returned safely to shore with all passengers, where Tongan medical services were waiting at the dock. Some passengers were assessed and taken to hospital for further checks before being discharged with no life-threatening injuries.

The remaining passengers returned to the Tanoa Hotel, where they were assessed by New South Wales paramedics, with Tonga Episcopal Unit (TEU) trauma counsellors also available to provide support.

The following morning, a karakia was held in the hotel foyer before delegates departed for the airport.

Tongan authorities have opened a formal investigation into the incident.

“We want to acknowledge Lahaina Tatafu and her crew from the rescue vessel Deep Blue Diving, Tongan medical services, TEU trauma counsellors, the other crews, and Tongan authorities for their care and assistance during this time.

“Our focus now is on supporting our people and helping them move forward following such a challenging experience.”
