Telling the stories of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, NZ and Polynesia

Posters foster good disabled lives

This year's Anglican disability ministry reflections for Lent connect the journey towards Easter with principles from Aotearoa New Zealand's "Enabling Good Lives" movement that promotes community inclusion for disabled people.

Anglican Disability Ministry Educator Rev Vicki Terrell has produced a new set of disability awareness posters for Lent 2025, following Rev. Leo Te Kira's suggestion to link each week's Sunday gospel reading to a quality of living as inclusive community. The posters while centred on Lent are useful throughout the year to raise awareness of disability issues in the church and to help Christian communities think about how to enable good lives for disabled people.

Posters picking up disability awareness themes for this week (Sunday 23 March) and the remaining Sundays of Lent are:

Lent 3

Based on the fig tree parable (Luke 13:6-9), the disability awareness theme of Lent three emphasizes nurturing others to live fulfilling lives, especially supporting disabled people to live an everyday life in everyday places. (Based on the Enabling Good Lives (EGL) fourth principle: "Ordinary life outcomes")

Lent 4

Using the prodigal son story (Luke 15:24), the fourth week's reflection highlights compassionate grace without limits, connecting to the EGL fifth principle of "Mainstream first" - supporting disabled people to access mainstream services before specialized ones, including inclusive worship and social events.

Lent 5

Drawing from Mary of Bethany's anointing of Jesus (John 12:3), the Lent 5 poster focuses on practicing recognition and respect for all people as created in God's image, tied to the 6th principle of "Mana enhancing" - recognizing and respecting the abilities and contributions of disabled people and their families.

Neurodivergent Spiritual Rhythms

This year an additional resource contributed by Rev Hilary Willett for Lent reframes traditional "Spiritual Disciplines" as "Spiritual Rhythms" which are designed to meet the needs of neurodivergent Christians looking to deepen their walk with Jesus during Lent.

Rev Hilary explains how naming the resource "Spiritual Rhythms" sidesteps negative connotations of punishment that many people can associate with "discipline".

The new poster suggests neurodivergent-friendly spiritual practices such as dancing to worship music, listening to reflective podcasts, stimming while praying, or lighting scented candles, and asks faith communities to support people in finding their own appropriate spiritual rhythms.
