Telling the stories of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, NZ and Polynesia

Anglican Primates share condolences

Archbishop Don Tamihere has shared some of the messages of condolence for Archbishop Fereimi Cama's passing that the Archbishops have received from primates of the Anglican Communion.

Taonga News  |  08 Jul 2021

Archbishop of Canterbury Most Rev Justin Welby

I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Archbishop Fereimi Cama. This is a great shock to the whole Anglican Communion. On behalf of the whole Church of England and myself, I would like to offer deep condolences to Archbishop Fereimi’s family, to Archbishop Philip and Archbishop Don, to the Diocese of Polynesia, and to the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. Please be assured of our prayers for you all.

Archbishop Fereimi’s wise and pastoral ministry expanded from the Diocese of Polynesia and the Province to the whole Anglican Communion. He was a strong leader on climate justice advocacy and natural disaster preparedness, which are profoundly important to the Pacific Islands and to us all.

I was very glad to have shared time with Archbishop Fereimi during our Primates’ Meeting in Jordan in early 2020, when he chaired an excellent session. His fellowship will be missed by all of the Primates.

I know that your brothers and sisters across the Anglican Communion will be holding you in prayer and love at this time. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

“So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.” John 16:22

Bishop of Lincoln, Bishop of Grimsby, Bishop of Grantham and Dean of Lincoln

We write to you to express our sadness and our prayers for the loss of your shepherd, Archbishop Fereimi Cama.

Since news of the Archbishop’s death there have been prayers offered for him, for his family, and for the diocese of Polynesia during worship in the Cathedral. We remember with gratitude his leadership on advocating for care of creation and his visit to the diocese of Lincoln as part of the conference on climate change in 2019. Archbishop Fereimi preached in the cathedral and led the delegation as the Lord’s prayer was sung in Fijian.

We also send our deep condolences to his fellow primates, Archbishop Philip and Archbishop Don, and the wider church of Aotearoa New Zealand and Polynesia. Please be assured of our continuing prayers during your time of mourning.

Please be assured members of the bishop's staff will join the livestream from Lincoln and be with you in prayer.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Most Rev Kanishka Raffel, Archbishop of Sydney

Greetings in the name of our Risen Saviour.

This brings the sincere condolence and deep sympathy of the people and clergy of the Diocese of Sydney, and the Province of New South Wales on the sad news of the death of our brother in the Lord, Archbishop Fereimi, Bishop of Polynesia and Primate of Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia.

As you may recall, we shared together in a zoom call last year with Archbishop Fereimi, before my election as Archbishop of Sydney. I thank God for his humble, prayerful and courageous witness and service of the Lord Jesus. We give thanks to God for Archbishop Fereimi’s life and ministry and pray for his family, and Province that all would be comforted by the Holy Spirit and renewed in the hope of the resurrection.

I am sorry that the funeral will be affected by our current shared difficulties with COVID-19. May the Lord strengthen and enable all those who participate, and those who mourn.

Grace and peace to you all from the Lord Jesus Christ and God our Father.

In Christ
Kanishka Raffel
Archbishop of Sydney and Metropolitan of New South Wales
