The Cyclone Gabrielle Appeal hosted by Anglican Missions has now reached over $350,000 and is ready for distribution.

Eligible Mihinare or Anglican ministry connected groups can submit Expressions of Interest (EOI) to help fund their Cyclone-related projects. Hāpaitia will consider projects detailing immediate response, medium-term recovery, and long-term damage reduction. Expressions of interest need to be in by 5pm Friday 14 April.

Process

The Hāpaitia funding group will review expressions of interest at the first stage and confirm which projects will be invited to formally apply.

Funding proposals must include a budget and endorsement from an authorised representative of a Mihinare or Anglican community such as the local priest in charge, an archdeacon, or the chair of an Anglican Trust.

Hāpaitia will award up to $10,000 per approved application.

Successful applicants will need to provide a short report on how the funds were used when the project is complete.

Mihinare and Anglican connected groups can apply to the Cyclone Gabrielle Appeal fund for projects that assist people living in difficult conditions now, provide for needs further along the road to recovery, or help reduce the impact of extreme weather events in the long term.

Examples of project types that will be considered include:
– Physical assets such as Starlink satellite internet access and generators
– Contributions to clean-up costs or repairs at churches, marae, or other community facilities
– Costs for consultants or expert advice on issues relating to building fitness, repairs, insurance, resilience and other matters, or
– Community hui.

About the Appeal

The Cyclone Gabrielle Appeal has seen a large influx of new donors, with significant support coming in from Anglican parishes and more than 700 individual givers.

New donors have connected with the Cyclone Gabrielle Appeal through Christian World Service and agencies such as TearFund and the UK Barnabas Fund.

The distribution of Cyclone Gabrielle Appeal funding is the second phase of the Anglican Church’s financial support for the Cyclone Gabrielle response.

Over $350,000 in grants has already gone out to churches, marae, minita and iwi who are part of the first line of response helping their communities to deal with the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle.

The first tranche of Anglican emergency response grants was made up of a $250,000 contribution from St John’s College Trust Board, while another $100,000 went out in small grants from the Waiapu Anglican Social Services Trust Board.

Inspiring stories of Mihinare and Anglican people stepping up to support the Cyclone response across the affected areas are coming through, including many minita and Mihinare whānau who have played a key part in iwi Māori initiatives to uplift and support communities, offering āwhinatanga and hope in a time of devastating loss.

More on these stories is coming soon...
