Holy Trinity Cathedral in Auckland is to host a forum to enliven discussion on principles and practices for the penal system.

The inaugural Bishop Selwyn Forum, on 17th October, is part of the adult education role of the cathedral to foster conversations about the common good in society.

Dean Jo Kelly-Moore says experts and organisations in the penal system and those with experience of incarceration offer valuable perspectives.

“As a society we often hear about seeking the common good; it is a simple phrase but often a complex matter that needs informed voices on topics such as our penal system.

“This forum invites the community to examine its views on penal reform. Initiatives can emerge from government and organisations that need an educated society with a willpower for a system that ensures the common good for all."

One of the organisers, Dr Anne Opie, is a writer and qualitative researcher on the prison system. Her work includes research on newly released prisoners who face societal, political, economic and personal changes.

“This forum is an important opportunity to review and place on a sound footing ways in which significant changes can be made in our prison system. We are hoping for change and it is critical to hear from those voices in places where such change can take place,” says Dr Opie.
