Anglicans have raised more than $1m for Christchurch – and those funds have now been passed to the two bishops in the city to distribute for quake relief and rehabilitation projects.
The actual sum raised to date by the Bishops’ Emergency Appeal is $1,020,261.33.
Some of that money has been specifically tagged.
For example, Canterbury Cathedral in the UK and other donors have donated $230,000 to ChristChurch Cathedral to spend as the dean and chapter think best.
Anglicare Western Australia has also sent $51,522.74 to its sister organisation, Anglican Care Christchurch, while Havelock North’s Rachel Coxhead raised $3738.59 for the diocese in her sponsored bike ride from Napier to Christchurch.
The ‘common pool’ balance of $735,000 has been equally split between the Diocese of Christchurch and Te Hui Amorangi o Te Waipounamu.
Bishop Victoria Matthews will oversee how the Diocese of Christchurch spends the money it has been given, while Bishop John Gray will oversee the allocation of Te Wai Pounamu's share.
According to Archdeacon Bernard Faull, who administered the appeal with his staff from the Diocese of Wellington, about half the donations received came from overseas, channelled via the Anglican Missions Board.
Some of this overseas money came from the American Episcopal Relief Fund – and further donations may come from this source once reports have surfaced on how the first funds have been used.
