Youth representation statute 2018

Here is the statute that implements the increased youth representation on General Synod and its Standing Committee that was agreed at Te Hīnota Whānui 2018.

Statute 744 The Title B Canon I Amendment Statute, 2018 

Whereas, General Synod/Te Hīnota Whānui in 1992 passed Statute 512 providing for the membership of General Synod/Te Hīnota Whānui and the Standing Committee of the General Synod/Te Hīnota Whānui, and Whereas, General Synod Standing Committee wishes to provide for better youth representation in its membership, and Whereas, the Tikanga Youth Synod 2017 and 2018 has called for better representation of youth / rangatahi at General Synod/Te Hīnota Whānui, and Whereas, Te Runanganui 2017 agreed to strive for at least one rangatahi in each Amorangi delegation to General Synod/Te Hīnota Whānui, 

The General Synod/te Hīnota Whānui enacts as follows: 

1. Title. The Title of this Statute is The Title B Canon I Amendment Statute, 2018. 

2. Purpose. To amend Title B Canon I to provide for better youth representation in the membership of General Synod/ Te Hīnota Whānui and the Standing Committee of General Synod/ Te Hīnota Whānui. 

3. Title B Canon I is amended by: 3.1 Inserting at the end of clause 1.1.4 the words ‘One of the representatives from each Diocese shall where possible be a youth representative, as defined by that Tikanga.’ 

3.2 Inserting at the end of clause 1.2.3 the words ‘One of the representatives from each Amorangi shall where possible be a youth representative, as defined by that Tikanga.’ 

3.3 Inserting at the end of clause 1.3.3 the words ‘One of the representatives from the Diocese shall where possible be a youth representative, as defined by that Tikanga.’ 

3.4 Inserting into clause 3.2, after the final words ‘at least two lay persons.’, a new paragraph with the words, ‘If possible three members of the General Synod/Te Hīnota Whānui who shall be one youth representative from each Tikanga, as defined by that Tikanga and nominated by that Tikanga, whether clergy or lay.’ 

4. Commencement. This Statute comes into effect at the close of the session of General Synod/ te Hīnota Whānui at which it is passed.
