Anglican Missions has opened an emergency appeal to fund the Church's earthquake response in Myanmar's most affected regions. The appeal will support emergency response through the nine dioceses of the Anglican Church of the Province of Myanmar.

Prior to the March 28 earthquake, Myanmar was already home to the worst humanitarian crisis in Southeast Asia, with 19.9 million people in need of assistance.

To date, more than 2,000 people have been killed in the earthquake and its aftermath, and search teams are still turning over rubble in search of bodies.

Essential infrastructure has been destroyed or damaged in the worst hit areas, along with up to 51,000 buildings, particularly in Sagaing and surrounds, including several airports which remain closed.

In the wake of the natural disaster, there are numerous reports of continued airstrikes by the military in the earthquake-devastated regions which were already among the most affected from the ongoing conflict with Sagaing, Shan, Bago, Magway and Mandalay hosting the majority of Myanmar’s Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Sagaing alone hosts around 1.3 million people who have been displaced due to political instability and internal conflicts.

The Anglican Missions appeal will work through the Anglican Alliance and enable the Anglican Church in Myanmar to procure and distribute emergency supplies of clean water, food, and essential items for people affected by the disaster.
