Seven schools in Wellington Diocese will join a pilgrimage tracing the roots of the Anglican Church.

The pilgrimage, which starts this Sunday, will mark the 200th anniversary of the landing of the first Anglican missionary in New Zealand, Samuel Marsden.

Bishop Justin Duckworth will lead the group.

"We are trying to take them to some significant areas in the diocese," spokeswoman Sue Fordyce said.

The journey will start in Otaki and head north to Marton, then to Jerusalem via Taihape.

The group will move down the Whanganui River on Tuesday morning and board a paddle steamer at Upokongaro for Wanganui.

It will then head to Taranaki and spend time at Parihaka.
