Have illustrated gospel, will travel

Southwell School pupils illustrate Mark's Gospel to serve as a travelling icon across Waikato and Taranaki.

The Marsden bicentenary is being marked in Waikato and Taranaki with a gospel that is on the move across the diocese and the world.

Students and staff of Hamilton’s Southwell School have produced an illustrated version of Mark’s Gospel, set for Year B of the lectionary.

Bishop Helen-Ann Hartley asked the school to produce the gospel as a focal point for the bicentenary.

She says the project was inspired in part by the rich tradition of illuminated manuscripts of the Bible that date back hundreds of years.

“I am delighted with what the students have produced as it is a treasured document that can richly tell about the Word of God across our diocese in the coming year.”

The project was assigned to the Year 5s, under the direction of art teacher Jane Savage, with help from Chaplain Neale Troon.

The front cover was illustrated by the Year 7 Dean, Damian Mills.

The children produced lithograph designs that are displayed throughout the text.

The gospel will travel the length and breadth of the diocese over the coming year.

It will also accompany Bishop Helen-Ann when she attends the bishops’ training course in Canterbury in early 2015, and when she subsequently visits her predecessor, Archbishop Sir David Moxon in Rome.
