Great and small in Nelson Cathedral

Fluffy the hen is still laying eggs after an intimidating round of worship in Nelson Cathedral.

Fluffy the hen was intimidated by the dogs at Nelson's Christ Church Cathedral yesterday, but she cannot have been too traumatised – she was still laying eggs this morning.

Patrick Meffan's hen was among dozens of animals and about 100 people at the cathedral's annual pet service, honouring St Francis, the patron saint of animals.

"There were a lot of dogs around so it was a pretty threatening sort of environment," Mr Meffan said.

"I think chickens know who their predators are."

Mr Meffan said his family has been taking their pets to the service for 15 to 20 years.

"It's a nice way of remembering one of the important saints – particularly for kids," he said.

"It's nice to reflect on the whole scheme of creation and [how] it's not just about humans."

Mr Meffan's family have three "layers" or hens, but only Fluffy was allowed to go yesterday.

"We have a cat but she's about 19 – a bit old to go really," he said.

Mr Meffan said the praying and talking did not inspire the animals as much as the hymn singing.

"There are a few dogs that join in – a whole barking chorus."

Dean Nick Kirk, who preached at the service, said it was a chance for people and their animals to come together.

"There are a lot of people in our society who really love their animals," he said.

The cathedral also held an evening service, with a welcome from taonga puoro expert Richard Nunns, WearableArt models, music from guest singer Annie Crummer, the Cathedral Choir, Chroma and JaDa Jazz and an address from Bishop Richard Ellena.
