St John's open to visiting scholars

St John’s College plans to welcome scholars needing a short period of writing and research ‘space’.

Taonga News  |  04 Apr 2014

St John’s College in Auckland is opening its doors  to visiting scholars needing up to three months' writing and research ‘space’ from July this year.

Canon Tony Gerritsen, Principal/Manukura of the College, says this is another way in which College resources can be used to help those involved in writing, study and research.

“The invitation is there,” he says, “for scholars to use the resources of the John Kinder Theological Library and to be part of our everyday life.”

It will be a win-win for all concerned, he believes.

“The level of community living and engagement will bring benefits both for the College and for the scholars – so ultimately the wider Church will be better served.”

Academics, clergy and staff on sabbatical leave from other institutions are invited to apply.

A furnished three-bedroom home on the College site will be available, as well as facilities for work on a book, thesis or other research.

Each residency will range from one to three months.

The chosen scholars will be invited to take part the daily life of the College,  including daily worship and lunch during term time.

The College can’t provide financial support or paid employment during the residency.

Applications for the second Semester of 2014 will close on Monday, 5 May 2014.

Details of the application process can be obtained from the Principal/Manukura of the College t.gerritsen@stjohnscollege.ac.nz

Applications for 2015 will close on Friday, 24 October 2014.
