CWS launches Haiti Appeal

Christian World Service has launched an appeal to provide relief assistance and help families recover after Hurricane Matthew.

Christian World Service  |  14 Oct 2016  |

Christian World Service opened its Hurricane Matthew Appeal this week to provide Haitian families with urgent relief supplies and materials to help rebuild homes and livelihoods.

CWS partners report that thousands of people have lost their homes and livelihoods in Hurricane Matthew, the worst storm in nearly a decade.

The southwest regions of the country were badly hit, with more than 100 people confirmed dead. Please pray for all those affected by the storm and for protection from disease.

Isolated areas remain cut off by landslides and slips and food crops including banana and corn plantations have been flattened.

Livestock have been swept away and many clean water sources relied on by communities have been destroyed or contaminated.

Working through the global churches aid and development agency ACT Alliance (Action by Churches Together), CWS will channel funds directly to the locations where people need help.

ACT Alliance partners were already on the ground before the storm hit, and made sure local partners had food, and hygiene and shelter kits.

But now some communications networks have been knocked out and isolated areas have not reported the full extent of the damage.

“We are working with local people to respond.” reported ACT Alliance to CWS.

“They know what is needed to survive in the aftermath of the storm and will make sure the people who need it most will get help first.

In the next few days we will receive the results of their needs assessment,” says Pauline McKay, CWS National Director.

Safe water is also a priority, as Haiti's health authorities fear the spread of cholera, which was brought to the country in 2010.

CWS will also work on long term support alongside local partner the Institut Culturel Karl Lévêque, which supports rural peasant communities.

Please give generously to support Haitian people after the hurricane:

CWS is a member of ACT Alliance a global coalition of more than 143 churches and church-related organisations working together on humanitarian aid, development and advocacy in over 100 countries.
